Explanation of programming recommendations

Darren Cole 1 year ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 1 year ago 3

It would be really helpful to have more detailed descriptions of why certain recommendations are being made.  I can’t tell, for example, why the app sometimes recommends a very low number of reps (3 instead of normal range of 8-15), or gets me to do a Max session, or started a deload for a given exercise.

I know a lot of the time it’s just adding a rep or a weight increment for progressive overload but when ever it’s not doing that it (e.g. because you under performed last time on the exercise, at the end of the cycle, whatever the reason) would be helpful to know why.

Hi Darren,

Thanks for your feedback! Truly appreciate your suggestion for more detailed descriptions of the recommendations.

Currently, we have a feature that provides additional information about the logic behind your sets and reps for each exercise. During your first work set, you can look for the exclamation mark at the end of the yellow coach tip line. Tapping on the mark will give you more information about why specific recommendations are being made.

If you would like to see more information implemented in the app, please let us know where and how you would like it to be displayed. Really appreciate your input to improve the user experience.

Best,

Carl

Thanks very much for the quick response! I have seen this, but I think it’s only in one or two places, such as where you have taken a couple weeks off it recommends a light set.

A couple of things that I don’t see that that would be helpful to understand if they are there somewhere:

- I don’t see a way to tell where I am in my meso cycle

- in some workouts it recommends just a few % decrease but I can’t tell if that’s because I didn’t hit my PR last time, or if there’s another reason

- sometimes the app recommends doing multiple sets with only three reps. But I have reps set to 8 to 15, and no strength goal (only hypertrophy)

in these examples I often just end up ignoring the apps recommendation, because I don’t understand it, but it would be great to know if there’s a reason why those recommendations come up sometimes

Thanks for taking the time to clarify Darren. I think support has been in touch re that 3 reps bug. Otherwise, your points are well taken. I look forward to seeing this get more votes so we can start working on it.

All the best,

Carl
