Bodyweight Work

Ciarán Sheehan 7 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 8

I’d love to see an option to set the weight at a fixed number but sets, reps, and rests optimized for maximum results ie certain ab work, pull-ups, push-ups etc

Dr. Muscle now supports bodyweight exercises and workouts! Create your own exercises, or select from our default list. We've also added bodyweight workouts levels 1 and 2.

The update is already available on Android and under review by Apple (give it 2-3 days). To update, visit the app store app on your phone, search for Dr. Muscle, and tap "update".

That's interesting. To be honest, one of the best ways to get maximum results from bodyweight exercises is to add external weight. Pull up with weight around your waist, push up with plates on your back, etc. Are you able to do that?

Or would you want to just use your body weight? If so, then the best way forward would be to add more reps. You would end up doing sets of 50, 100, even 200 reps.

I have voted this up.

I'd like to see a body weight format especially for those that travel and hotels have limited equipment and gym is not close by.

Note to self:

Regarding bodyweight exercises, if you have access to external weights, here's how you can do them right now with the app:

1. Choose exercises you can do at least 12 reps with
2. Enter your body weight when you do 12 (or more) reps
3. When the app asks you to do fewer than 12 reps, you'll get a weight higher than your body weight. Use external weights to make up for the difference.

It would be great that the app could do the math for us if we want to do exercises like pull-ups, dips, ect. and also appropriated warm-ups.

Just voted this +1. I think adding a bodyweight only section would be good such as pull-ups push-ups etc.

It would be neat addition to integrate a "Travel" workout as when traveling you don't know how hotel gyms are set up so even to include bodyweight alternatives would help a lot.

Thanks for your feedback guys. For now, as you know, the app works best with exercises that you can load with weights. For bodyweight exercises, it's hard to reduce or increase the weight. But you can do it.

Take chin-ups. Say you can do 12 reps at 175 lbs (your BW). The app tells you to do 10 reps at 185 lbs. You would just need to hold a 10-lbs dumbbell between your feet (or use a weighted belt) and you would be fine. Basically, you add to your body weight. You cannot subtract from your body weight, so make sure you get recommendations that are heavy enough (adjust the reps in the settings menu if you need to).

I realise this is not optimal, and I can see that this feature is getting more and more votes. As soon as it becomes #1, we'll implement it. Thanks!
