AI comments after workout

Dominique O 2 months ago updated 2 months ago 2

On occasion, the app suggests a lighter load for an exercise than in the previous workout. It says “Deload”. I have several questions here:

1. I’ve only been doing the workout in question for 2 weeks. Is it normal that there is already a deload?

2. If I follow the recommendation and perform the sets with the lower reps and/or weight, the app then says that my strength went down upon completion of the exercise. I may be misunderstanding what’s happening, but that sounds quite contrary. This happened a few days ago, and upon completion of the entire workout, the AI summary said that the exercise in question was my worst lift :-(.

3. Today, the same thing happened, and the AI summary said that my volume progress has not changed in the past few days. I could have lifted more. I’m not understanding why the “deload” comes into the picture.

Could someone please clarify what’s happening? Thank you.

Hi Dominique,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the app suggesting a deload at what seems the wrong time. It can certainly be frustrating to see strength or volume go down. But it's important to understand that progress is not always linear, and that deloading may be the best course of action at times.

You can learn more at deloads at https://dr-muscle.com/deload. The app will recommend them when your performance has gone down or when it's stuck to prevent overtraining and injury.

Following the recommendation to deload by reducing reps and/or weight temporarily may help your body recover and come back stronger in the long run, even if it may seem counterintuitive initially.

If the app suggests a deload but you feel like you could have lifted more, you can always cancel it. Just tap the alert icon on your first work set (that says deload) and tap Cancel deload. Further, you can also always make any exercise harder by tapping the three dots next to it and Challenge.

Thank you for your reply.

I wasn’t so much questioning the purpose of deloads, but instead the AI comments that follow. It seems weird to say that strength went down or that volume did not increase when recommending a deload.
