Modify Rep Ranges

Marc David 7 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 11

I've always had good progress using a weight that is heavy enough to fail between the 15-20 rep range.  It's light enough to alleviate the tendinitis that starts to accumulate with 5-12 heavier lifting.  It's great for blood flow.  It's heavy enough to be effective but light enough not to need a spotter on some exercises.

I'd like an option to adjust the rep range for a workout and let the A.I. do it's magic to suggest what I need to use for the 15-20 range.

Maybe even a Custom Workout but one of the questions would be.. your rep range.  And then let the A.I. work with your custom workout overall settings.

This one was released today! You can update via the Google Play or the App Store app on your phone. The update is live on Android and under review by Apple (give it 1-2 days).

Hi Marc,

Always nice to hear from you.

We've had a similar request in the past (http://muscle.userecho.com/forums/1-submit-your-feedback/topics/11-restrict-rep-range-for-some-exercises/). I wasn't very popular. Let's see if this one takes off...

You mention having the option to adjust the rep range for a workout. What I had in mind was to set this option at the exercise level. So every time you did an exercise, you'd get the rep range you selected, independently of the workout it's in. You could have the same exercise in multiple workouts and get your chosen rep range. You could also have different rep ranges for different exercises in the same workout. It seems more flexible that way.

How do you feel about that? Should we set that option at the workout or at the exercise level?

That might work just as well.  If I'm doing Squats today it's going to suggest something based on the current settings.  If I opt to just select some random weight and do 15-20 reps, it might boost my % for the week or lower it.  But if I had the option before starting to pick the "Exercise Level" the A.I. could in theory adjust to select a weight that would match.

I don't want to mistake Exercise Level in the 15-20 rep range as being pink weights!

I was able to use the 70 lbs dumbbells for 3 sets reaching positive failure.  It was actually pretty hard.  If I'd used the 35 lbs, that would defeat the purpose.

Hi Marc,

Yes, I think we're saying the same thing.

What I meant was this:

You would set that option for each exercise, and not each workout.

Of course, let's say you tell the app you want to exercise for up to 20 reps in the squat, the app will compute everything for you and give you a weight that's just heavy enough for you at 20 reps. No pink weights!

But you would have more flexibility by changing that setting for each exercise than you would for each workout.

I'm back to my original thought after working out yesterday... I would like a Global Variable that lets me set the default rest time and rep range per custom workout.

Instead of doing a built-in workout or a custom and having to adjust each exercise... I'd like to make a custom Break-In Routine 1

That would allow me to create exercises for this routine, rest, and ranges and let the A.I. use it's magic to suggest weights and sets based on my progress.

Note to self: "joints were aching so I manually backed off"

+1 for this

I would like to make myoreps are automatic in the app. Take a weight which you can lift 20 times..wsit 5 seconds an do 5 more...repeat for 4 to 5 mini sets. I use myo reps only for assistance exercises, so +1 for being able to set reps to 20.

I would like to have the option to not go below 8 reps on certain exercises like curls or french press etc. You could make us choose before we start an exercise...for example (6-8) (8-12) (12-15)...

I prefer not to do more than 12 reps in my routines. Can I have the option to disable the high 15 rep option?

Hi guys,

This suggestion now has the most votes, so I've moved it up on our roadmap. A rough ETA is 4-6 weeks. I'll keep you posted.

For now, you can still to do more (or fewer) reps than the app recommends (if that's what you want). Simply up (or lower) your weight, do your reps, and enter what you did. The app will still track your 1RM and adjust automatically for your next workout. I realise this workaround is not optimal, and I look forward to adding this new options to the app for you guys.

Thanks for your support and patience as we improve the app.
