Weight control for available dumbbells and plate sizes

Peter Naughton 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 5 years ago 13

(For better control of your workouts)

The weight suggestions that the app gives me are very odd numbers like 52.5 or 97.2 and it is well known that most pre-loaded dumbbells come in five pound increments or multiples of five starting at five pounds, but when your gym has plates that are 45,35,25,10,5,2,5 pounds the fractional weights aren’t possible even with barbells because of the limited plates available and the pre-loaded dumbbells in multiples of five and pre-loaded barbells come in multiples of 10. Therefore, the app needs a better way for people to calculate or control the weight that is suggested to you and me for better use and understanding and control over your own workouts.

Thanks for voting for this feature! Dr. Muscle now supports custom weight increments. We hit a few bumps in beta, but the update is now finally available to all users on Android and under final review by Apple (give it 2-3 days). To update, open the app store on your phone, search for Dr. Muscle, and tap "update".

Now would be a great time to suggest and vote for our next feature. If you'd like to do that, please visit: https://muscle.userecho.com/communities/1-submit-your-feedback/topics#.

Really appreciate your help and advice. Thanks!

Agreed. A suggestion for workouts is letting us add what plates or weights are available for the workout. For example: When we are using dumbells it's telling us to do add 2.5 to the weight but there aren't any 2.5 dumbells available to us they go up by 5s. And another machine has specific weights to go up like 10, 25, 35, 50. If we could add what weights are available for each exercise it would be extremely helpful instead of having to round down or up to what we have available.

would be awesome if you could tell the app exactly what weight increments are to hand so it always directs to something that is possible. I rarely have exactly the weight asked for. not a big problem, but it's nice to not have to think about anything except lifting the things.

For dumbbells, would love an option to have the weights in increments of 5lbs vs 2.5lbs as most DB's don't have such small increases.

Thanks for that suggestion guys. For now, when you don't have the exact weight, you should round up. Enter how many repetitions you did.

- If you can do all the recommended reps with the higher weight, great!
- If not, no problem. Just enter what you did.

The app will adjust, and you'll keep making progress. To be honest, it will not make a big difference in your progression, especially long-term.

Still, if or when this suggestion becomes #1, we'll implement it. Thx!

Is it possible to improve the rounding of weights in the metric system? E.g. instead of 78 use 77.5. This would make loading the bar easier.

Speaking of 1.25kg weights --- A very simple question during Set Up would be, What are the smallest weight increments available at your gym? It’s annoying and draws focus away from working out when you have to continually round all the weights. Lots of gyms have 1.25kg – not so many have 1kg weights. The more the app can do from the start, the easier the user experience, and the more your users will want to stick with you.

Wierd weights. I can't warm up with 67.5 pounds (just an example). I have a rack with a barbell and 2.5 is the smallest weight I have. Same with dumbbells. I don't like to use dumbbells because changing the weight takes a lot of time.

We've begun working on this feature! App will ask "What are the smallest weight increments (plates) available to you?" Thx Christian for that wording suggestion. Will update here when this new feature is available to test. Cheers guys!

I suppose it's will come with monday, tomorow ?
