Realistic workout time estimate

Kevin Allard 2 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 1 year ago 3

For the full body workout the app always gives an estimate of 30 minutes, but it always takes me about two and a half hours if I follow the app's suggested rest times. And I always skip bench at the moment, so it would be even longer if I did that as well. If it's impossible to do the full body workout in 60 minutes following the default rest sessions it doesn't make sense to have 60 minutes as the standard estimate for it. Could you change the settings so that it gives a realistic time estimate for the workouts?

Thanks for voting for this feature! It's done.

We're revised the way the app estimates your workout duration. We've also added a "Workout duration" setting that influences how any warm-up sets and work sets you'll be doing. You can find it under the Settings tab (bottom bar).

Now would be a good time to suggest and vote for our next feature. Please visit https://muscle.userecho.com/.

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's in beta! From the announcement: https://muscle.userecho.com/communities/1/topics/352-add-shouldertraps-as-body-part-priority

Beta update: Customize your workouts further with 5 new body part priorities

More body part priorities are coming! This is one of our top requested features, so I’m thrilled to bring it to you. With this version coming up in beta, you can now ask the app to prioritize any of 10 body parts, including abs and biceps, but also now traps, shoulders, calves, and more! To customize that, just tap Settings (bottom bar) and scroll down to Body part priority. With this update, we're also speeding up the app and making it more stable, so your workouts are faster and smoother. Thanks to all who voted for that feature, and for your support. We truly appreciate it.

If you're in the beta:
On Android, you can already download the update. On iPhone? You'll have to wait 7-10 days for Apple to release it. To update:
– Open the store app on your phone
– Search for Dr. Muscle
– Tap update

Not in the beta? Click here to join: https://dr-muscle.com/beta-program/. Otherwise, you'll get a notification inside the app in 7-10 days when the public version comes out.

Adaptive Weight Increase

Joseph Williams 4 years ago updated 4 years ago 3

The maximum weight / personal best that each exercise aims for should be more adaptive to the person, the exercise, and their history.

For big, compound exercises that I've been doing for years if I could get a 0.5% increase in my theoretical maximum, I'd be ecstatic.  Frequently, however, when it comes time to do the full hard-day deadlifts, bench presses, or squats, the Dr. Muscle application will recommend a weight/set-size for an insane 7-9% increase in my maximum.  I would injure myself even attempting that first rep of those sets; it is asking for weight far outside the bounds of what I can do and what would be safe to attempt.  This leaves me selecting my own weight amounts in order to find something that pushes my limits but doesn't injure me.

These big never-going-to-happen increases sometimes crop up for other single-muscle-group exercises but bother me less there.  I don't feel like I should call ahead to book a room at the hospital when attempting to curl significantly more than I can; I'll just not reach the number of reps Dr. Muscle is hoping for.

In short, it would be great if the application applied reasoning or logic such as this:

"We asked for a 5% increase last time, the user completed the set, and said he could have done 5-6 more reps. Let's shoot for another 5% this time."

Or

"We asked for a 5% increase last time, the user was only able to manage a 0.3% increase and indicated it was incredibly difficult, let's shoot for another 0.4% this time."

I'm currently using the Beta version of the product.

Hi Joseph. Thanks for your feedback. Totally understand your concern. These big increases generally happen because of custom increments. If you set your increments to 0.01 lbs/kg, you'll see exactly what the app wants to recommend. You can also increase your rep range to give the app more options to play with and find that perfect increase for you. When it can, it already works along the lines you described. So, these big increases definitely look odd. I'll have someone from the team follow up with you shortly by email. Thanks!

Making the app choose weights based on available plates

Seppe Hoobergs 4 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 1 year ago 1

Making the app choose weights based on available plates

this will give a broader range of weights that can be used with an exercise for instance instead of based on

1.25kg as smallest plates

2.5kg, 5kg, 7.5kg,  10kg...

you could

also use smaller plates of 0.5kg

wich will give you:

1kg, 2.5kg, 3.5kg, 5kg, 6kg, 7.5kg, 8.5kg, 10kg

this gives a broader room for training and weight choises.

And let u use all the weights you have available

Thanks for voting for this feature! It's done. You can now customize your plates (and other equipment) in full. Here's how:

- Tap Settings (bottom bar)
- Tap Change equipment
- Toggle on any of the gym profiles

Now would be a good time to suggest and vote for our next feature. Please visit https://muscle.userecho.com/.

Multiple gym profiles

William Biever 5 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 4 years ago 3

I would like to see the ability to set up and save multiple gyms / equipment profiles to choose on a daily basis or travel to different gym. For example:

a) Home

b) Work

c) Hotel

To specify what equipment is in each gym, and add/remove equipment at any time, including cardio equipment like spin bike, rowing machine, etc.

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 4 years ago

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's in beta! You can now set up different equipment profiles for workouts at the gym, at home, or on the road. To configure them, tap More, Settings, and scroll down. If you have more than one profile set up, the app now asks you automatically which profile you want to load as you open it.

Joseph, I noticed we don't really cover your request with this release (generate workouts on the fly based on equipment available). So, I created another topic for it.

In the meantime, if you're in the beta:

On Android, you can already download the update. On iPhone? You'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

- Open the store app on your phone
- Search for Dr. Muscle
- Tap update

Not in the beta? Write back if you'd like to get in. Otherwise, you'll see a notification to update inside the app in 7-10 days when the public version comes out.

Now would be a great time to suggest and vote for our next feature. If you'd like to do that, please visit: https://muscle.userecho.com/communities/1-submit-your-feedback/topics#.

Really appreciate your support and advice. Thanks!

Make the design more simple, flat, and focused on the task

Stephen Cohen 5 years ago updated by Michal D 1 year ago 1

The app is feeling increasingly over featured. That is, there are so many improvements it's losing that simple feel the original had. It was essentially a “modern fluid UI” Simple, flat, and focused in the task.

That is, what do I do, how much and how many. Day to day that is the core value for me. The rest timer and the plate calculator were excellent adds and generally do not did not interfere in the flow.

Much of the ability to create, manage, change, and edit things are nice but are only useful occasionally yet they are in every screen. I admit my bias for doing edit like planning things before or after a workout and never during.

The latest UI update seemed more clutter than value to me. The body part image isn’t, for me, useful DURING a workout The Font increase for the weight and reps was welcome (I’m old and prefer to not wear my glasses while I lift :)

I’m neutral on the x/n tracking. Its small.

The hard thing to “fix/adjust” is the sliding panels. When viewing and entire workout, I like it. During the workout I would prefer the screen be exclusively a single thing… the weight, the reps, and the rest timer in between.

None of these are fatal just my preference for designs that are simple and focused.

PERSONAL WEIGHT (GAIN/LOSS) TRACKING IN APP

Gregory Schultz 5 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 3 years ago 4

GROUP: Personal weight is recorded when one signs up for Dr Muscle. Would you like to track this PERSONAL WEIGHT GAIN/LOSS COMPONENT WITHIN THE APP?

RATIONALE: Since one of the goals is weight loss or at least measurable transformation in converting fat to muscle, it would be helpful to have the info tracked and make it part of the history/charting.

INITIAL RESPONSE FROM DR MUSCLE: “It is a great idea! I also thought it would be nice to track the body weight eventually. Would you like to suggest it to the other users and see if they would like us to work on that?”

ACTION REQUESTED: Group: jump on the band wagon and offer your “YES” or “OTHER APP TRACKING SUGGESTIONS”.

Make personal statistics data available via API

Ross 5 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 5 years ago 1

I'd love to be able to extract my training data via an API, for use in a presentation layer, that I could use to see more in-depth, custom graphs over time.  I know there's the web-app at the moment but my thinking is that, by providing this data via API, the community could develop some open-source dashboards (yes, I'm volunteering) that would mean the core dev team could focus on the app.
