Explanation of programming recommendations

Darren Cole 1 year ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 1 year ago 3

It would be really helpful to have more detailed descriptions of why certain recommendations are being made.  I can’t tell, for example, why the app sometimes recommends a very low number of reps (3 instead of normal range of 8-15), or gets me to do a Max session, or started a deload for a given exercise.

I know a lot of the time it’s just adding a rep or a weight increment for progressive overload but when ever it’s not doing that it (e.g. because you under performed last time on the exercise, at the end of the cycle, whatever the reason) would be helpful to know why.

Hi Darren,

Thanks for your feedback! Truly appreciate your suggestion for more detailed descriptions of the recommendations.

Currently, we have a feature that provides additional information about the logic behind your sets and reps for each exercise. During your first work set, you can look for the exclamation mark at the end of the yellow coach tip line. Tapping on the mark will give you more information about why specific recommendations are being made.

If you would like to see more information implemented in the app, please let us know where and how you would like it to be displayed. Really appreciate your input to improve the user experience.

Best,

Carl

Add Ability To Link Smart Scale Weight Tracking

Austin 3 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 11 months ago 3

It would be awesome to not have to manually update my weight daily. I use a Withings scale which talks with my Apple Health and other body tracking apps but does not work with this one currently.

Answer

Thanks for voting for this feature! Customer Lou B recently confirmed this work via Apple Health:

"This is exactly the setup I have for my scale. And.... the Dr. Muscle App is picking up my weight daily. So I can confirm it works."

Add more Body metrics besides weight.

Jim B 3 years ago updated by Joseph P 3 years ago 2

You have body weight and I see you are planning on adding more metrics.

You also say in the weight info that check how your pants fit to see if they are loose. Meaning your weight can stay the same or even increase when you add muscle. So checking your waist line will let you know if you are losing fat. In general. It would be nice to be able to add the waist measurement for tracking. And possibly a fat% I use a scale and look for trends not absolutes. Possibly other measurements for tracking.

All-Time 1RM listed on Exercise Summary alongside current estimated 1RM

matthew brady27 3 years ago 0

Currently on the exercises summary you just see if you've performed better or worse than your last workout. This is great but can be somewhat misleading over a 6 month period for example because you might find yourself dropping performance (due to fatigue) and building back up to your old performance but not actually making any improvements on your 1RM over a 6 month period for example. You just yoyo up and down depending on your fatigue and fitness levels. This is why I think an All-Time 1RM listed on Exercise Summary alongside current estimated 1RM would be beneficial

Upgrading EASY/MEDIUM/NORMAL exercises

Seppe Hoobergs 3 years ago updated by Tony T 2 years ago 14

I would like to make the suggestion to delete the easy/medium exercise we got and simply replace it by clicking on any exercise-> settings->difficulty level--> easy/ medium/normal.

offcourse this means easy and medium level exercises should be based of normal level exercise percentage.

for instance

easy: 5/6 rir

medium: 3/4 rir

normal: very hard/ 1/rir

now we dont have to make exercises in difficulty levels which doesn't work based on the normal level exercise

This also let you take it easier on a exercise if you're just not feeling it for that day without losing progress the next weeks, which happens when you deload,

because you need to work back those -10% back up the next 2/3 workouts.

so if you can go to the -> exercise-> setting->difficulty level.

wheter it's in the workout itself or the exercise list this would be a hughe improvement.

and a great value for custom programs.

Guys, good news!

We just implemented this feature for custom exercises. Seppe, that's via the path you suggested:

Next to any custom exercise, tap More

Tap Settings

Select your preference under Exercise difficulty

Does this work for what you are trying to accomplish?

Adaptive Weight Increase

Joseph Williams 3 years ago updated 3 years ago 3

The maximum weight / personal best that each exercise aims for should be more adaptive to the person, the exercise, and their history.

For big, compound exercises that I've been doing for years if I could get a 0.5% increase in my theoretical maximum, I'd be ecstatic.  Frequently, however, when it comes time to do the full hard-day deadlifts, bench presses, or squats, the Dr. Muscle application will recommend a weight/set-size for an insane 7-9% increase in my maximum.  I would injure myself even attempting that first rep of those sets; it is asking for weight far outside the bounds of what I can do and what would be safe to attempt.  This leaves me selecting my own weight amounts in order to find something that pushes my limits but doesn't injure me.

These big never-going-to-happen increases sometimes crop up for other single-muscle-group exercises but bother me less there.  I don't feel like I should call ahead to book a room at the hospital when attempting to curl significantly more than I can; I'll just not reach the number of reps Dr. Muscle is hoping for.

In short, it would be great if the application applied reasoning or logic such as this:

"We asked for a 5% increase last time, the user completed the set, and said he could have done 5-6 more reps. Let's shoot for another 5% this time."

Or

"We asked for a 5% increase last time, the user was only able to manage a 0.3% increase and indicated it was incredibly difficult, let's shoot for another 0.4% this time."

I'm currently using the Beta version of the product.

Hi Joseph. Thanks for your feedback. Totally understand your concern. These big increases generally happen because of custom increments. If you set your increments to 0.01 lbs/kg, you'll see exactly what the app wants to recommend. You can also increase your rep range to give the app more options to play with and find that perfect increase for you. When it can, it already works along the lines you described. So, these big increases definitely look odd. I'll have someone from the team follow up with you shortly by email. Thanks!

Tie more settings (like min max weights) to equipment profiles

Jessie Hanna 4 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 1 month ago 2

Min weight, max weight, lbs vs kgs, etc (the units section) that ties to the equipment profile section. For example, my dumbbells at home max out at 70 lbs. The dumbbells at the gym max out at 120 lbs. Would be good to have the available weights change in tandem with available equipment profiles.
