Enter age since this makes a difference in my recovery time

Steven Schwartz 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 2

How can I enter my age since this makes a difference in my recovery time?

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's done! When you create your account, the app will now ask for your age and give you a program with fewer workout days or even easy workouts based on your answer.

If you're already using the app and your progress is slow, I would recommend you consider:

- Getting on a split body program if you're older than 30

- Getting on a level 6 program if you're older than 50

You may recover better (or worse) than other people your age, so those guidelines may not apply to you. If you've been making good progress on your current program, I'd stick to it.

If you're on Android, you can update now. If you're on iPhone, you'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

- Open the store app on your phone
- Search for Dr. Muscle
- Tap update

Now would be a great time to suggest and vote for our next feature. If you'd like to do that, please visit: https://muscle.userecho.com/communities/1-submit-your-feedback/topics#.

Tell me the calories I’ve used during a workout

Mark Heuvelman 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 7 months ago 6

Would DrMuscle be able to tell me the calories I’ve used during a workout? It knows the sets, reps and weight so I think it would be able to do this?

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 7 months ago

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's in beta!

Dr. Muscle now shows you your calories at the end of each workout, and on your History page (coming soon). Note that counting calories can help you burn fat, but that you must be careful not to eat too much to do so, even if you work out hard.

If you're in the beta:

On Android, you can already download the update. On iPhone? You'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

- Open the store app on your phone

- Search for Dr. Muscle

- Tap update

Not in the beta? Write back if you'd like to get in. Otherwise, you'll see a notification to update inside the app in 7-10 days when the public version comes out.

Quick / turbo mode (30 min workout max)

Johen M 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 5

What I'm encountering now is more of a time crunch especially when the workout starts to add additional sets. I'm by no means quick so I think I'm nearing an hour before I finished my bodyweight workout (and then add in the shower and changing time). This is starting to get more limiting since I do it during the lunch hour at work or if I have a family. Would it be possible to add a "quick" 30ish min workout plan? Could be just the initial 3 sets of increasing reps and 1 cool down set before moving on. Does what I'm saying make any sense?

Cheers,
J

Open settings and toggle on quick mode to get 2 work sets for all exercises. That way, your workouts should last max 30 minutes.

If you're on Android, you can update now. If you're on iPhone, you'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

"Level up"-Feature for Custom Programs

Keiwan Mosaddegh 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 1

Suggestion: Apply the same intelligence of the predefined Dr. Muscle Workout Programs to your custom programs.

I'm currently creating a custom workout program, including custom workouts with exercise variations that I enjoy the most. After creating my workout variations (representing the different levels of the program), I expected that 1) I either had the option to apply a certain amount of workouts in order to unlock the next workout of the program, or 2) the app would apply its intelligent features to it automatically. Unfortunately it did neither of them, and after the my first workout of my custom program was done, I was directly referred to the workout of the next level in the program.

In order to solve this I have two ideas in mind:

  1. Make it possible to customize the current Dr.Muscle workouts and programs. If so; I would be able to replace the exercises of the current Full-body workouts (2-3/wk) as I wouldn't use it in it's "current condition". By doing so, the underlying intelligence is still applied to the program, with the only difference that the labels of the exercises are replaced with my preferred exercises. This one sounds like the easiest, but perhaps not the most long term fix.
  2. Make it possible to create new programs through a predefined template. This one is correlated to 1) in the sense that I rather get the option to choose what exercises, and the amount of workouts, in the framework of an intelligent program. For example there would be a section where the user would add all his or her level 1 workouts, a section for all level 2 workouts etc. Then the workouts in each level would be iterated in the same way as of the predefined Dr. Muscle programs. There could even be recommendation on when to add easy workouts etc.

This is just a rough draft of thoughts coming from a fitness enthusiast, and there could easily be more obvious solutions to this. But short and sweet; apply the intelligence of the predefined programs to the user's custom workouts.

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's done! You can now level up custom programs you create inside the app or via our Web app. This lets you link programs together over long training cycles and change exercises, rep ranges, and more over time. I would only recommend that for avanced users who know what they're doing.

If you're on Android, you can update now. If you're on iPhone, you'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

- Open the store app on your phone
- Search for Dr. Muscle
- Tap update

More (or fewer) warm-up sets for certain exercises

James Blanchard 7 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago 5

One observation I'd like to make is maybe making an option to have more warm-up sets for certain exercises? I'm squatting later today and some of the jumps between warm-up sets seem quite large?

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 6 years ago

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's done!

Tap "..." next to an exercise and "use custom warm-ups" to set your warm-ups sets from 0 to as many as you want. In the next release, you'll also be able to set a global setting (for all exercise).

If you're on Android, you can update now. If you're on iPhone, you'll have to wait 2-3 days for Apple to approve it. To update:

- Open the store app on your phone

Automated drop-set function

Julian Goggi 8 years ago updated by Peter Naughton 7 years ago 9

Personally I would love to see an automated drop-set function (obviously this can just be done manually but I wonder how this affects the algorithm for the next workout-guess we shall find out if it asks me to deload or start with a super light weight :-).

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 7 years ago

Thanks y'all for your patience! Instead of drop sets, we ended up automating rest-pause sets. In some ways, they're better. To learn more, check out this new guide: http://drmuscleapp.com/news/rest-pause/.

Add more Body metrics besides weight.

Jim B 3 years ago updated by Seppo V 6 months ago 3

You have body weight and I see you are planning on adding more metrics.

You also say in the weight info that check how your pants fit to see if they are loose. Meaning your weight can stay the same or even increase when you add muscle. So checking your waist line will let you know if you are losing fat. In general. It would be nice to be able to add the waist measurement for tracking. And possibly a fat% I use a scale and look for trends not absolutes. Possibly other measurements for tracking.

AMRAP & EMOM Workouts

jjabrony 4 years ago updated by Seppo V 4 weeks ago 1

One of my most effective programs to get shredded was one that included a lot of EMOM and AMRAP workouts.

EMOM - Every Minute On the Minute

AMRAP - As Many Rounds As Possible

EMOMs typically includes 2 similar moves or the same move with heavy then light weight. Example:

10 minute EMOM - 5 Hammer Curls heavy, 5 Hammer curls light

I would then have a timer that dinged at each start of a minute. I would do my 5 heavy, immediately switch to my 5 light, then what ever time was left in that minute, I’d be allowed to rest. Once the timer dinged and the minute was up, rest time was over and I’d start the round over again.

AMRAPS typically included 3 moves, 2 similar and one that allowed those muscles to rest for a moment but still kept me moving.

10 minute AMRAP - 5 Incline bench barbell heavy, 5 incline bench dumbbells light, 15 crunches.

The timer was set for 10 minutes and I had to do as many rounds of that workout as I could during that time frame. Progress was tracked based on how many rounds I got thru each session.

These workouts were intense! And the results were some of the best I ever saw during the six week program I did.

I would love to see something on the app that let me set up these types of timers and round trackers and them progressively increased my weights or my reps the way the Dr Muscle app does do well!

Customize the number of sets (e.g. 10 sets for German Volume Training)

Gerald Hughes 5 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 5 years ago 1

I plan to use the standard workouts for a few months. I just wondered if there was a way to program my next training block (in about 4-6 months) using German Volume Training methods with 10 sets.

[Also useful for 5x5 programs and the like.]

Allow user to "FAVORITE" an exercise

Cristian Coban 6 years ago updated by Carl Juneau, PhD 5 years ago 1

I am doing 2 extra exercises at the end of each workout. It is a time waster to have to find the correct name of the 2 exercises and type in the search box the name every day. This is very easily improved by the below method:

Allow user to "FAVORITE" an exercise (and "UN-FAVORITE" it later), which then shows as a first tab ("Favorites") before the body parts. This way the list can be maintained by user, who can add and remove exercises from this list as needed. I like this option the best as it is customizable.

Answer
Carl Juneau, PhD 5 years ago

Thanks for voting for this feature -- it's done! You can now “Favorite” an exercise to see it at the top of your exercise list. To mark an exercise as a favorite, tap More next to it, Settings, and toggle on Favorite. You can toggle Favorite off the same way.
